Founded in 1874 by the American Andrew Taylor Still, osteopathy is a manual medicine that heals by touch and manipulation.
It is a holistic discipline that advocates a global vision of the individual. The osteopath evaluates the posture, skull, bone and internal organs. Through the benefit of fine palpation and precise handling, it help eliminates the tensions that cause dysfunctions and imbalances. The goal of osteopathy is to restore homeostasis, that is to say the balance between the different structures of the human body.
With the help of his hands, the osteopath intervenes – according to the problems identified- on the three main corporal spheres: The parietal sphere for the musculoskeletal, the craniosacral sphere for the head-pelvis axis, and the visceral sphere for the internal organs. Thus, the osteopath identifies parietal dysfunctions by locating muscular and fascial tensions or joint blockages that are responsible for pain and functional disorders. It restores the fine mobility of the bones of the skull and normalizes the rhythmic movements of the cerebrospinal fluid in connection with the sacrum. And finally, it helps the organs of the abdominal and thoracic cavity that are often the cause of back pain or pain elsewhere in the body.
In addition to address, in a different way, the same problems as physiotherapy, osteopathy is effective in helping many physical ailments:
